Speech title: Vortex-mode-based Communications in Optical Fiber

As a newly explored dimension, spatial division multiplexing (SDM) has been demonstrating great potential to tremendously increase the data capacity in optical communication systems. Recently, optical communications SDM channels carried by vortex modes have gained much attention. In this talk, we will first introduce the basics of optical vortex and its various applications. Next, we will discuss the potential of using vortex modes for SDM in a ring fiber, including mode-division multiplexing (MDM) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) of vortex modes with 1.6-Tb/s data capacity through 1.1-km of ring fiber. Furthermore, newly designed air-core ring fiber for supporting 1322 vortex modes and multi-ring air-core fiber supporting a total of 2280 vortex modes at 1550 nm will be introduced. These ring fiber designs have great potential to increase the spectral efficiency and the overall capacity in fiber-based communications systems.
